Review: ROCKBOX 2 for Lovehoney

OK, for starters, on the Lovehoney website, the ROCKBOX 2 is always in capitals. I’m not entirely sure why, but it seems a little..shouty. So from thereon in I shall be referring to it as the Rockbox 2. Hope that’s ok, Lovehoney! For the record (and whilst I’m clearing things up), I also received this toy in exchange for this review.

So, the Rockbox 2 is a singular toy. I’d read reviews where people had loved it and some where they hated it. Naturally, I wanted to see for myself what it was like. Everything so far had led me to believe the Rockbox 2 was a little like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. After trying it out myself, I was actually a little disappointed with my feelings towards it. It’s, well, it’s ok. I was hoping to be able to write a review where I was either extolling its virtues or slating it. Sadly, I can do neither.

Certainly there are things that some people will definitely hate. The noise, for example. It’s particularly loud. Personally, noise doesn’t usually annoy me. I reviewed the iGino One and Rev1000, both of which are very noisy toys, but didn’t mark either of them down for it. I can cope with noise as long as it hits the spot. There are things that some people will love, too. The power is immense. It’s a huge rumbly 5000rpm beast when it’s at full pelt. Sadly, when everything is added together and taken as a complete toy, it’s just…ok.

For those of you who perhaps haven’t seen it before, the Rockbox 2 is a big handheld, mains powered vibrator. It comes with two attachments, one for vulvas, one for penises. Obviously, I’ve only used the one for penises (although I do hope to convince my other half to give it a try soon, to see if she likes it). It has a hefty handle with a big, satisfying on/off switch and a dial on the rear of the handle to change speed. The handle is actually very similar to the one on my petrol leaf blower. If only the Rockbox 2 was as quiet…

You can use it with a partner, but I’ve found it easiest to use on my own. That said, there are only a few positions it can be really used in, due to a few design flaws. Personally, I’d like to be able to leave it on the floor and balance my penis on the vibrating attachment. Sadly, that’s not a great option. Used one way, it’s comfortable, but when I orgasm I’d ejaculate all over the clip and into the mechanism of the machine. Used the other way, my testicles would be against the clip itself, which isn’t comfortable and I’d end up ejaculating all over the handle & the on/off switch. The only really safe way is to use it laying on your back or side.

As I mentioned earlier, I can zone out and ignore the noise of most toys. For me, it’s all about how a toy feels. This one gave me a decent orgasm, and brought me there very quickly, but it wasn’t that much better than, say, the orgasm from a Cobra Libre, or Pleasure Pulse (click here for my review). To be honest, I don’t think the effort of setting up, plugging in and operating the Rockbox 2 is really worth it when I can take either of those two toys and use them for similarly intense orgasms with far less hassle (and more position options). That’s not to say I haven’t enjoyed the Rockbox 2 when I’ve used it, but it’s an undoubted case of severely diminishing returns with regards to effort/orgasm strength. RockBox-4

There’s also the price. It’s not cheap at a penny under £100. Lovehoney sell the Cobra Libre II for £79.99 and the Pleasure Pulse II for £68.99. Overall, I’d recommend both of those over the Rockbox 2, all things considered. Now, if you’re really looking for one of the most powerful sex toys around (and can’t afford to spend thousands of pounds on a Sybian), then this is definitely for you. I’m still glad I have one. I already owned both a Cobra Libre and Pleasure Pulse so, for me, it was a nice addition to my toy collection. But I think the market, with regards to users with penises, is quite small. It’s probably down to folks who already have both those other toys, who specifically want immense power, aren’t bothered by noise and are happy to blow, as near as makes no difference, £100 on their next toy purchase. If that’s you, then let me tell you, this is the toy for YOU! If not, may I humbly suggest either the Cobra Libre or Pleasure Pulse instead.

Thanks so much for sending it to me, Lovehoney!
