Review: Tantus Alumina Flow

This is another one of those reviews I’ve been trying to write for a while.  Not for a lack of enthusiasm about the product.  Oh no.  I just wanted to be able to do it justice.  So here goes…

I’ve had the Tantus Alumina Flow for probably a couple of years, but even when I bought mine, they’d been on the market for a good while.  I remember first seeing them on the interweb and wanting one immediately.  I’d never tried a metal toy and thought that something from this range would be perfect.  I was right.

The Tantus Alumina range encompasses a series of products that either work on their own or, if you have more than one, work together in a kind of mix and match way as each piece is interchangeable.  They are all made of aluminium and come in two main pieces (with a small washer in between) using exactly the same size internal screw thread.  This means that, with more than one toy, you can swap things around a little and choose an alternate end for your favourite handle, or vice versa.  They’re also anodized, which increases the thickness of the surface to add durability and, more importantly, give them that wonderful look and feel!  I should also take a moment to comment on the packaging.  Tantus are normally fine when packaging their products, but I hadn’t seen any that would be classed in the same league as Lelo, njoy or even NobEssence.  Until now…  The Alumina range are shipped in matte black cardboard boxes, with foam inside for cushioning.  Very elegant and worth keeping for storage.  Packaging that really is fit for a gift to a loved one.

Mine is the Alumina Flow, which has two softly designed ends with sweeping curves.  The largest part is 1.5″ wide with the smaller end (which I use as a handle) a little under an inch wide.  It’s 9″ long in total, with 4.5″ of insertable aluminium joy on each side of the washer in the middle.  I always use the smaller end as a handle and insert the larger, slightly more bulbous end.  It’s the only toy I have with a real handle; this  makes it wonderfully easy to use, whether on my own or with a partner.  I didn’t realise what a difference having a toy with a proper handle makes until I found this one.  Thrusting, playing gently or just holding it against my prostate whilst flexing my PC muscles is just so easy.

Now if you thought the Alumina range looked good, well, they feel even better!  They’re smooth to the touch, but not completely smooth like an njoy toy.  They have a slight texture to them, due to the anodizing of the surface layer.  This makes them have slightly more friction than other metal toys, but I don’t think this is a bad thing at all as it gives them a little more feel when moved around.

Also, aluminium is, proportionally, a light metal.  Because of their size, though, Alumina toys are still very weighty.  You’d be forgiven for thinking they were a collection of truncheons.  Certainly, if I’m ever burgled in the middle of the night I know the first thing I’ll reach for before confronting them downstairs…  The additional weight not only makes them feel different from glass or wooden toys but it also makes them sensational for holding a temperature.  Whether it’s hot or cold, these toys take a long time to change.  If you’re looking for a toy for temperature play, these will do just fine.  Personally, I find cold toys to be, well, an acquired taste.  I do, however, love warming this up in hot water before using it.  I *always* leave it in a basin of hot water for 10 minutes before picking it up.

I really can’t recomment the Alumina Flow enough.  It’s one of my favourites and one I keep using, in spite of having it for such a long time.  I really must buy more from the same range.  I’m thinking maybe a Pace plug next…

If I haven’t convinced you already, they’re non-porous, hypo-allergenic, you can use ANY type of lube you like and are dishwasher safe (see here, right hand side).  You can buy them here, direct from the Tantus website.

      Sorry about that…!

I really want them all, too. I love the anodized aluminium and the mix & match way they all work together is a real bonus.
